In Heavenly Love Abiding (SATB & Organ) by Iain James Veitch (Digital Download edition also available)
Text: Anna Letitia Waring (1823-1910)
Total duration: 5' 25"
In Heavenly Love Abiding was originally composed in 2016 for a St. Davids Day concert using the Welsh text Cymru Dewi Sant by Sir Albert Evans-Jones (1895-1970) (known in Wales by his bardic name of Cynan)
I was unable to find any information about the poem Cymru Dewi Sant - including its copyright holder and status. However, it was written to fit the tune Penlan composed by the Welsh composer David Jenkins (1849-1915)
Penlan is a tune that I remember from my school days in Wrexham as a hymn called Pa Le, Pa Fodd Dechreuf (Meaning: Where, and how do I begin) (text by Roger Edwards 1811-86)
However, perhaps the best known text associated with this tune is the one used for this version: In Heavenly Love Abiding by Anna Letitia Waring (1823-1910)
This work is more than a mere arrangement of the hymn tune. After an original introduction the first verse is presented in a re-harmonisation of the original. The second verse is treated in the form of a chorale prelude, while the third verse is harmonised in a more contemporary ‘close harmony’ style. The fourth verse (using the the words from verse 1) is a grander version of the opening verse - this time a tone higher in pitch.
Here is a video score of the Welsh version (Cymru Dewi Sant)
